I have to say, I've been reading this thread with some interest. First off, people have been getting themselves killed over the stupidest of things since the dawn of time. That's just a part of humanity. When you really get down to it, it's a pretty safe bet that we've all found ourselves at one time or another in a dangerous, potentially deadly situation by our own bad judgment.
I've done it. One time when I was railfanning on the UP Washy line, I climbed up a hillside that looked directly down on a tunnel portal. The soil was super hard up there and I almost fell. I would have landed on the tracks most probably too hurt to move or dead. All for a picture! Most, if not all of us, have darted into traffic because we didn't want to sit and wait 20 seconds to safely merge. That's putting your life and the life of another person at risk for 20 seconds. Is that as dumb as walking down the tracks not paying close attention to see if a train is coming? Well, you be the judge -- and that should be easy.
