The tunnel at Wellington ( near Stevens Pass, WA) caved in about 1000 feet in from the west portal in the winter of 2006 - 2007. This created a dam and water filled in behind it. In the winter of 2006-2007 the dam gave way on two occasions and water and mud flowed out. We have not had any reports what happened this past winter. The road to Wellingotn is still covered with lots of snow.

Last summer the USFS calculated there was nearly one million gallons of water behind the dam inside the tunnel. Also that at the dam the water was 18 feet high. ( The tunnel is only 21 feet high)

The area in front of the tunnel has lots of warning signs and the trail is closed near the tunnel only. The rest of the area, parking lot, concrete snow shed and trail are open.

As the snow melts we will get new information.
