This conditions should be familiar to many RR enthusiast's.....

Trains and the term "foamer" comes to mind..... those with an "irrational" level of fixation..... often about trains, cars, planes, and sometimes about something else, like say the visions of a "bike utopia"?

It's about a level of fixation that creates such a focus or "vision" in the individual that rational empathetic understanding or compromise with others is not really possible. I've seen this same kind of "fixated" condition in "trolley jolly's", monolithic monorail maniacs, and the "pod" people I've dealt with over the years. They all share the common trait that their "vision" is the perfect way, all of the other steps most of us have to take, which may lead to different conclusions, or may not support their specific "vision" are suspect, or just wrong. The vision is everything, and in extreme cases it becomes an obsession.

Rational economic, scientific, engineering, environmental, safety, social, or political reasoning becomes secondary to the "vision" some of these folks are fixated upon..... These are not necessarily stupid people, in fact, they are often quite bright, but the "fixation" leads to irrational, inappropriate, or even counter productive social interaction. These people often have an inability to empathize or to consider the input of those who don't share this highly fixated "vision" they have adopted.

This fixation is about his vision of the the "Evil" Train, and his "vision" of it being replaced by his "vision" "unique" and complete bike utopia. Yes there maybe and often are other viable and reasonable compromises or options, but since they are outside the limits of his unique "vison" set, they are not going to ever be acceptable.

The good news is that people with this level of fixation, are by the nature of the fixation, not well socialized, are unable to sublimate their fixation to build stable "coalitions", and in the long run will tend to be their own worst enemies, in many cases.

Either that, or maybe they managed to inhale too much leaded gas....before we took it out.... which some say cause the same symptoms, and they're just crazy.......
