Sidings north of stadium way always existed, NP/BN called the area the Upper Yard (in the 1950's the tracks were used mainly for storage). In the 1980's BN removed the pass track crossing across stadium Way. MRL was the last great hope for the P&L, when BNSF put the line up for bid, MRL sent officials to each town on the P&L to get their input on MRL's plan to run up to 5 unit trains per day to Lewiston. Mayor of Pullman was less than excited about the idea, but said nothing could be done about it. Big hit came with the '96 flood and the huge amount of misinformation about the damage done to the lower end of the line. MRL was told by IDOT and WSDOT that the results of a joint fly-over of the lower end revealed many missing bridges, information caused MRL to abandon the idea and it was too late when MRL found out the information was totally wrong. Officials stated that MRL wanted to run grain, talc, clay and more as part of a joint venture with another Washington Corp entity through the ports of Lewiston and Wilma. Big loss for railroading and for the ports. Locals believe that a certain trucking company with green tractors headquartered in St. Maries had a major influence on how things were handled by IDOT.
