Gee, its 0430 hours on 03-30-2016 and I am typing on A-P. Wierd ! Thanks for the compliments Margaret.
Mr. "Mouse"-- The south-end Sacramento Northern cars operated on 1500 volts DC from Sacramento to 42nd Street & Shafter Avenue in Oakland. There was a section insulator two blocks before reaching their famed yard at 40th & Shafter. After crossing that insulator, the SN was on the Key System voltage of 600 volts DC. It used the Key System "C"-Line on 40th Street to reach the "Bridge Yard". At the far West end of the "Bridge Yard", just before going on to the SFOBB (bridge) itself, they crossed another section insulator and started picking up the 1200 volts DC that they shared with SP's-IER cars. Catenary was strung across the Bridge for SN and IER to share. KEY was on third rail at 600 volts DC.
SO-- the SN cars (which were equipped with changeover switches) could operate on 600, 1200 or 1500 volts DC. Clever, huh ?
The Bay Bridge railway had "Bridge Yard" immediately adjacent to the bridge Toll Plaza area.
The SN and IER cars were serviced in the West end of the Yard and the KEY cars were serviced on the East end of the Yard.
Between San Pablo Avenue and the KEY Subway was "Yerba Buena Yard". The Subway was used for KEY transbay trains and occasional freights operated by the OTR using SN locomotives.
"Streetcars" never used the Subway except for rare charter operations.
Hope this answers everybody's questions. And a special thanks to the comments from our beloved "Stash" ...
