The 4 cars being scrapped at Willits are all former SP cars. All had been fire damaged within the last year and that is why the cars were put up for sale. One was an ex-Sunset Ltd Budd coach. The other 3 were former Shasta Daylight 1949 Pullman-Standard smooth-side aluminum coaches. It is indeed a shame that we have lost these once fine cars, but it is a very tough sell to preserve a car today when we are competing with historically high scrap steel prices, not to mention the huge expense of having to truck said equipment off of the NWP to live rail. It ain't cheap. And one needs to act VERY fast when the cutting torches have already been lit and the bulldozer is standing by. These scrappers can't stand around while we hold bake sales trying to raise $25,000.00 to buy one of these things.
There are no current plans to dispose of any other NCRA-owned passenger cars still stored at various locations on the former NWP.
