The Historical American Engineering Record (HAER) of the National Park Service has a series of research articles on the Natron Cutoff, including extensive history from Black Butte to Natron. Go to [memory.loc.gov], type in "Natron Cutoff" in the search engine, and it will bring up about 13 different documents. Black Butte-Natron is the first one.
