You must NOT be an Oakland native like I am.. There use to be coal all over the place.
There were outlets that would sell it to you or even truck it to your house. A lot of folks burned fireplace coal in their fireplaces besides wood.
Just TWO coal distribitors in East Oakland alone that come to mind are Robert's at High Street and MacArthur Blvd and also Spangord's on East 12th Street at about 18th Avenue.
Spangord's would bring big sacks of coal to our house on 38th Avenue and dump them in the "coal bin" my grandfather had constructed.
