I haven't been to a locomotive auction recently...Larrys Truck/Electric and some of the other dealers seem to have really BIG checkbooks and when you add the 10% buyers premium you can spend a lot of money real fast.
We have no need really for any 6-axle units; would really like to have acquired the ex-BNSF SW1000 the Modoc Northern picked up at the BNSF auction and had I known about it would probably have bid.
As to the salvage operations, we are always buying and scrapping something...the last several years we did half a dozen smaller track takeups...soe went to scrap; the rest we will use to upgrade our own track and scrap what we replace. With scrap now around $400/ton, we don't leave anything behind!!
The scrap market is so hot now that the availability of "stock" is often out of reach. We recently got a quote on 115 and 136 relay rail at around $850/ton; two weeeks later when we were ready to buy it was at $1,200/ton which really murdered our budget.
