Move to Alameda ... interesting idea, but now that the last tracks have been abandoned everything would have to be trucked in and would be isolated ... whereas at their present location it's an expedition but there are rails connecting them to UP. Anyway ... yes, they should spruce up the old buildings and use them for something. I was a BAERA member for a short time in the late 1960s and they had some pretty good parties there as well as a good bookstore.
If the "train people" had stayed, would the track to the vernal pool preserve still be in place and usable for excursions? That's gone but I don't recall when it went away.
One thing they do have in the middle of nowhere that would not be available in Alameda is a historical section of SN to run on. Also, RVJ is less likely to be sunk (literally) in the inevitable big Bay Area earthquake than Alameda.
I never knew a "Railfan Day" was planned. Where was the invitation/etc. published? If it was here, it flew by without me noticing it (might have been when I was out of town for a week...).
Mandatory snide comments: what happened to the BART line that was supposed to extend from Concord to Sacramento along the old SN? If RVJ goes away, who will keep the Central Valley Development Corporation in business?
