WOW. After reading this entire string, it sounds as if RVJ is going down the tubes fast. The 2014 "Members Day" [they really need to change the name, or limit access to members] was a success, with lots of equipment running and carbarn tours available. The old carbarn 1 was open for walk-in visits. But it sounds as if things have gone downhill since then. Margaret is right when she points out summer heat is a problem up there.
Maybe they're having problems getting volunteers of late, and maybe the lawyers are making life difficult. I've never heard of the picnic area being off-limits; that seems counterproductive.
I'm not sure what to make with the de-emphasis on "mainline" trains, especially since they have a couple of WP steamers and the Circumnavigator's Club on static display. It sounds like they went out of their way to alienate and antagonize volunteers interested in such things although there is some logic to specializing in one area of expertise, electric cars, which the neighboring museum in Sacramento doesn't cover at all. Down south, everyone coexists at OERM/SCRM.
