It isn't just the copper thieves, some "railfans" can be just as despicable in their conduct.
Two cases at WRM:
1. A couple of years ago, we found that someone had entered one of our cars, and dismantled an air gauge. All that was taken was the silver face of the gauge and the two indicating hands. This was clearly the work of someone enhancing a personal collection at the expense of our museum.
2. Years ago (according to someone whose account I trust), a group of trolley enthusiasts were given a ride on one of our cars, and left the museum fairly suddenly after the ride was over. My friend told me that our staff then discovered that someone had stolen one of the whistles off the car this group had just been riding.
And people wonder why some carbarns are locked when no volunteers are available to supervise them?
