I doubt that very much RR scrap would have been "donated" to the war effort in WWII. Since scrap, of that volume and value, would more likely have been "sold" by the RR's, as these are and were then "for profit" corporations. If there were any noteworthy cases that could be found of wartime RR "scrap" donations, this would most likely have been a public relations activity to support the war effort, and not a common business practice.
I have to admit, that though I am now officially "old", that I wasn't around for WWII. Although, I know of no case where the SP was donating any scrap whatsoever to support the "war effort" in Viet Nam...... But, I did notice, back then, that the SP did get paid by the taxpayers, through that danged evil "gubmint", to haul a lot of ammunition for the war in Viet Nam.
