"A 1950 effort to build a pair of tunnels just east of the Grapevine route for an even faster rail route was promoted by shippers and Occidental College economics professor Dr. Cecil Dunn."

It seems the proposal was for a road and rail tunnel. I suspect the Chandlers and the Ranch were not too keen about this idea.

I wonder if Prof Dunn et al left some more detailed alignment plans. Dunn was chairman of the economics department.
