The media has gone downhill since the 80s. Especially in the BA. You can blame deregulation of the broadcasters. KTVU news was once the gold standard, but when Fox bought it, it went downhill. Anyhoo that stuff is best left on 415 Media's blog.

As for the tankers, storage is very common. Even on the SC&MB they store tankers, although some QQed about the "dangers".
