Del Mar citizens get on the local news telling us they are well-educated and oh so careful on the railroad tracks, and they say how dare the railroad tell them not to walk on the tracks.

Then we read today about three guys just standing on the tracks, one getting struck and killed by a train. Had they been smoking something or were they just that dumb?

A man was reportedly taking pictures with his phone when he was struck and killed by a train in Del Mar on Saturday night, a sheriff’s official said.

The victim was with two other people near the tracks north of 13th Street when a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train traveling about 40 mph approached about 9:15 p.m.

The train’s engineer spotted the three pedestrians and noted one was taking cellphone pictures, a sheriff’s official said. The engineer sounded the train’s horn and switched on several bright lights, but the trio didn’t move.

One of the pedestrians was hit by the northbound train and died before being taken to a hospital. He was not identified.
