78 ft rail was used for the new track built as part of the WP Railroad main line relocation to accommodate the new Oroville Dam back in 1962. More on that here:

Also, new rail is still available in both 39 ft and 78 ft lengths in certain rail weights, including 100 lb rail and 141 lb rail, as one can see at this LB Foster page:
