Here is another bone I want to throughout to the Novato and the rest of the NCRA-NWP opposition. Re-opening of the railroad to Eureka is by no means a SLAM DUNK by any stretch of the imagination for a whole host of reasons; the least of which is the environmental concerns. Regardless of the Goldman-Sachs proposal, the Port of Eureka is more likely to entice some shipping companies to drop some containers off at the Port with the lure of discounted docking fees and faster unload times. They will not wait for the railroad and just like Oakland and Long Beach, will use trucks to move the freight. Despite the UP and BNSF Having the lions share of the container business, thousands of trucks a day are also picking up and setting out containers at those ports. Sooner then later, those trucks will be moving south from Eureka on 101 thru Novato and headed east on #37 to I-80 at Vallejo. What about the impact to the environment around Novato, Petaluma, Santa Rosa and up and down the Redwood Empire? One 80 car train carrying two containers takes 160 trucks off of 101. But wait, Novato doesn't want that train. The would rather have the bigger carbon-footprint, noise, congestion and pollution from the trucks then the train. WAIT! There is more, the FRIENDS OF THE RIVER, a group that opposes the NWP will have a procession of trucks coming right down 101 thru Laytonville, Garberville, Cummings and Legget instead of have a train going down the Eel miles away. The congestion along 101 will make the summer RV crowd look like a walk in the park. Finally, as the economy picks up, as it surely will, lumber production will pick up dramatically, and all of that traffic, will be on trucks too out of Eureka south on 101 thru Novato, causing more congestions and wasting time and fuel. One 100 car trains removes over 300 trucks from the Highway. I await the SPIN from the Misty and others on this one, too.
