I'll ask the question again. Can you site any major
container port in the US not served by freight trains?
I honestly don't know the answer to the question, but
I suspect the answer is no. Trucks can't compete with
freight for long distance (over 500 mile) shipments of
many commodities. For container ports to economically compete they
need to be able to access the national freight network.
BTW, in Oakland most of the containers coming into
the port that are shipped to LA are shipped by
truck, not rail, despite the multiple freight lines
serving the port.
You may think this contradicts our concerns, but it
is the basis for many of the disagreements with the arguments advanced by
the pro-NCRA crowd. Freight and truck traffic are frequently
complements not substitutes, like baseball and beer.
