Excuse me a bit since I strayed from the original theme here...but in my opinion the Uintah Ry. in Western CO should never have been built. All you have to do is visit it by following the ROW & one can see just what an engine buster this line was.
The little Baldwin 0-6-2Ts were good for just one wooden passenger car over Baxter Pass.
The 50 ton 2T Shays had a rating of around 45 tons. Why they & Lima did not try to engineer something larger is beyond me.
For all their hoopla, the modern 2-6-6-2Ts were good for only 90 tons over Baxter Pass! That's NINETY tons. This was adjusted down from the original rating of 140 tons. Easy to understand why this line was gone by 1939 or so.
I do acknowledge that the Uintah was a historical and fan favorite, but I'd have dreaded being an auditor or somebody responsible for the financial end of it.
