One must not forget SP's original planned route north out of LA via Santa Monica and Malibu to Oxnard. This was the SPs first choice for a more direct Coast line route out of Los Angeles, to reduce time on the route then taken through Piru and Santa Paula, in the early 1900's. Rhoda Ring (a relative of Adohr Farms fame) the owner of the area around Malibu had no intention of being pushed around by the notorious Octopus. She refused to sell a right of way to SP, and it is even reported that she built a small narrow guage railroad, to set up an existing operator to keep the route from being taken through condemnation. SP had to settle for the San Fernando Valley via Chatsworth and the Santa Susanna Pass. Who could imagine a Surfliner or a Metrolink Commuter pulling into the Malibu Station? Just had to settle for Daylights thundering through Chatsworth......
