Do people in WI actually drive the speed limit?
On I-5, once clear of the major urban areas, most of the trucks I've seen are doing around 60, and if you aren't prepared to run at 90 you have no business being in the left lane. Except of course when one truck doing 58 pulls out to pass 3 or 4 others doing 57 . And that's no exaggeration; I did the LA drive a couple of times this year, and if you're doing less than 80 you have to stay right. Speed limit is 70 for cars and 55 for trucks/anything pulling a trailer (but try telling that second point to the ones towing UHauls or boats at 85). It's essentially rush-hour traffic with no rules all the way, with periodic brake checks for passing trucks and about 10% slaloming through the traffic on Grapevine at 100+. People are crazy.
For LA runs, I prefer Southwest if time matters, Amtrak if it doesn't. Driving is cheaper (with a group), and faster than Amtrak (and sometimes even Southwest, depending on schedules), but it sure isn't a pleasant trip. 99 isn't much better, with more lanes but also traffic and more towns to go through. Now add to that super triples at 75+ and have fun /s!
