A much sadder tale is the old Shasta. It was part of the SP's Bay Area ferry fleet and eventually ended up in Portland. During the Oregon Centennial it was renamed the Centennial Queen and operated public excursions between downtown Portland and the Centennial Fair Grounds in North Portland (the old stock yards.
After the fair it was moved to the Willamette River and anchored near the Sellwood Bridge where it was converted into a floating restaurant. However, it broke loose during a bad winter storm and headed off down the river. It was corralled and moved to a site near the Broadway Bridge opposite Union Station.
There it sat for many years serving as a restaurant. It was eventually purchased by a couple of business men who shopped it around as a meeting place, restaurant etc. After several years it was moved to a spot on the Columbia River west of Portland near Goble on the BNSF's line to Astoria. It can be seen briefly from Highway 30 if one knows where to look. The fact that it is still afloat is a miracle. It was easily seen from the Lewis and Clark Explorer train where train crews expected to see just the top of the smoke stack on each trip.
