FTFY. It's only money, right?
If you're building for flyover traffic, by all means go as straight as possible. That's what the tube train will do if it ever happens. Really, the Hyperloop should tunnel all the way, through the upper mantle, but that would require a way to deal with the temps and pressures and plate movements (Musk just needs to wave hands again?).
Maybe we should hold the $10B with the end-to-end travel time restriction for whichever Hyperloop bunch comes up with a workable prototype first, and let the "transportation" HSR compete for normal transportation funding and perhaps some future bond that is more reasonable?
And this has to do with UP agreeing to back out of freight operations in Caltrain territory how? Really? If it's part of the National Railroad System and somebody really wants to move freight on it (and pay for it), common carrier principles suggest that some way to move it can (perhaps must) be worked out. It may not be worth UP's while to keep fighting it for what's probably a tiny amount of traffic on its books, but some short line could almost certainly step in. If NY&A can haul freight on the LIRR in between the fleets of commuter trains, then it should be doable on Caltrain.
