Brian Whipple--I haven't heard that name in decades and neither I nor my wife can remember who or why!!
The mind is a terrible thing to lose.
Back in those days I was working at the Portola RR museum painting locomotives (WP805A, SP2001, etc.), replacing a power unit in the Alco FA (7667?)with help from the Alco genius from Ely (augh, another name I can't remember, he was a great guy though--and actually I was just helping him!), and even considering moving to Ely (and glad I didn't).
I was hoping going over this would wake up a memory, but it hasn't.
As for the bearings on the MRS-1, they became rusty from sitting so long, and I helped Doug out by using a Dremel tool to round all the rough edges of the rust pits so they wouldn't grab the Babbitt liner. The idea seemed to work, I never heard of it having a hot axle. Fortunately the rust was localized. Sometimes shade-tree methods work, although I was skeptical and did it under duress!
