Wow. My guess is both railroad & highway will take years to restore. Those landslide paths look *so* long and unstable -- even trying to cross by foot looks to be excessively hazardous.

I took the train on this route about 30 years ago when I crossed the Pacific Ocean for the only time in my life.

I looked up severe damage to a US mainline due to earthquake. The earthquake of 1952 completely closed SP's mainline between Bakersfield and Mojave -- I've seen notable photos, some of which are here.
