I certainly hope you are right but I suggest you are downplaying the malevolent power of the "darkside", ie. BART Vader.

Of course the B should never have been trashed - one of numerous major mistakes in Bay Area transportation.

#1 in my estimation and a real sleeper: Rolph and O'Shaughnessy should have gone all out to buy up the United Railroads in the teens. Without the opposition of the private operators the subway measures of the 30's would have passed and much more of the rail lines saved. And BART closed out of Market St. and maybe Mission.

Of course Mssrs. Rolph and O'Shaughnessy did not enjoy a crystal ball. And could not know how bad things were going to get later.
