I want to ask a serious question, without starting a flame war. I am not able to participate in any restoration projects, given other obligations and requirements on my time, so I am not really connected to that particular part of this hobby. However, as I read comments on this and other forums, I get confused at something which in my mind makes no sense whatsoever. The question is this: "How can any railfan be anti-steam?"
I grew up in the diesel age, when 2nd generation diesels ruled. I never was able to see a steam locomotive operate, except on special occasions. But growing up, I learned to recognize the different nuances of the many varieties of diesel locomotives and of course, had my favorites. So for me, preservation of my childhood experience is important. But it pales in comparison to the excitement of a steam locomotive.
So as I wonder about hating steam, I cannot fathom how that is even possible for someone who loves trains. I understand the need to prioritize resources, but to set aside and even neglect a steam locomotive is, for me, nearly an unpardonable sin. So, can anyone explain this seemingly unnatural hatred for steam (without flaming)?
