I don't hate the technology or the machines. I was just frustrated at the disruptions that steam locos can cause at museums. There is an interesting case that just concluded at a Wisconsin museum, if you have read Trainorders or the Trains Magazine news wire.

In any case, I think steam engines are about the coolest machines out there. What amazed me the first time I watched UP 844 glide by on level track at 40 mph was how silent it was. The whole crowd of folks that had gathered to watch it pass erupted into spontaneous applause when it was over. I've never seen that happen trackside before or since.
