The membership fee isn't substantial but what other forums on the internet require that kind of upfront expense?
Todd said way back when the membership fee helped pay for the railcams and the huge expenses that went along with them. Those railcams are either offline or not frequented much anymore. Server bandwidth doesn't cost nearly as much as it once did.
It would seem his costs have gone down substantially.
How many members does TO have, 4000?
That times $36/year comes to $136,000 annual revenue.
Dave Curlee told me this discussion board was costing him about $35/month to operate. That was years ago so its probably more now but the comparison is still relevant.
