In the steam days particularly on coal fired operations, to make fires more difficult to start the railroads spent much more time and effort on keeping down the vegetation along the right of way than is necessary these days. It is interesting some non turbo charged diesel locomotives have a reputation for throwing hot carbon out of the exhaust and starting track fires.
