A much better piece than most but includes BART mouthpieces yet no BART critics. The role of gross stupidity and corruption is totally overlooked. The SP and Bechtel engineered broad gauge to make it vastly less likely to seize SP property. It worked.

Someone once told me Stalin justfied his infamous paranoia with the general remark if I can think it so can others. Well, my approach to rapid transit in 1960 would have been to use the full and raw political power of the state to expropriate the SP system in the Bay Area and convert it to rapid transit. Electrification, new bridges and/or tubes, and downgrading of freight ops.

In other words a sort of S-bahn, not an NYC subway. Any urban subways would be for Muni or AC to implement. Anathema to the SP and SPUR and the downtown SF manhattanizers. Let them build their damn skyrises in Oakland. They ruined a magical place.

Meantime any major new BART crap should be standard gauge and driverless. And then rip apart the existing stuff and redo.

A major reason why Caltrain electrification should go forward soon and I hope Trump and his DOT recognize this. The Bay Area needs to see a modern standard OC electric rail line to compare to BART even if it is way overpriced. If Trump wants to mess with Jerry Brown(and I hope he does)deny PB any test drilling in the Angeles National Forest. And Donald - tell Jerry to just buy up the Tejon Ranch and turn it into a park.
