At the time - midsixties - better and smarter minds were scratching their heads over BART broad gauge and advising BART-Bechtel not to do it. A hundred plus years of hard-fought railroad experiences militated against it and even in their own hearts and minds they must have know better. Even know BART is allowing a sort of sotto voce mea culpa on the gauge scandal.
If you fall for that we're worried the cars might blow over in a stiff wind bs I don't know what to tell you. They did not even take advantage of the broad gauge to deploy wider cars; BART cars are of the same width as MARTA's.
When push comes to shove, follow the money. 2 Bechtels sat on the SP director board. It were the SP what done it. Charlie Smallwood saw it as the real reason at the time. We laughed about it but everybody was afraid of Bechtel's huge political power in the Bay Area to protest. Something about never working in this town again.
