Interesting about the SP -- what I had heard at the time BART was being designed was the opposite: BART wanted the non-standard gauge so that SP could never "appropriate" the BART trackage, even in an emergency. This was (allegedly) especially true of the under-Bay tube.
Given the extremely tight loading gauge of its tunnels and tubes, it seems a bit of a stretch, but that's what I recall hearing at the time.
