For a definitive discussion of the BART track gauge, read "BART At Mid-Point" by Harre W. Demoro, Interurbans special # 31. Since Demorro also wrote for several different newspapers, much of this information also was published elsewhere. According to Demorro, the broad gauge track was chosen because prevailing sidewinds blew the cars against the downwind rail that gave a rougher ride and caused extra wear on car wheels. Danger of cars blowing over never was mentioned.
Demoro also discussed at length the possibility of SP influence on the choice of track gauge. Demoro stated clearly that there was NO SP influence.
