I have seen numerous posts over time on this board and other railroad forms with people discussing wanting the 4449 to make a trip to California again. Last time it went to California it was supported by BNSF and ran on UP lines under BNSF trackage rights. One reason I have read a few times is that it is too expensive to go to California operating an excursion and fear is they would not sell enough tickets to cover the trip costs? My question is...would not the bigger reason be that if 4449 is operating an Amtrak excursion, they would have to get permission from UP directly to operate over their owned tracks in the areas BNSF would have trackage rights such as the Feather River Canyon? With UP s no foreign steam policy I would think that is the real reason 4449 does not try and go to Sacramento with an excursion. I wouldn't think BNSF would support an Amtrak steam excursion under their trackage rights?? Wouldn't make sense for them to do that?? Am curious if anyone involved with the 4449 group might have an answer to this.
