Not to mention any names but back in the good old days prior to the SP-UP merger there was a SP Oregon Division Superintendent as well as others that helped "grease the skids" so far as steam operations were concerned.

Allowing the SP 4449 to operate as freely and professionally as it did provided the comfort zone that upper management needed to sometimes look the other way. During the 80's and 90's the SP had much more to worry about than a steam engine operated by a very competent crew running on their railroad.
