Sure, there are rather long diesel-hauled passenger trains; the Indian Pacific comes to my mind, where two locomotives haul 30 cars. Among those cars are also generator cars for hotel power, meaning that the whole power from the locomotive engines is used for traction and the locomotive auxiliary components.
About longer trains, how long are the platforms now? long enough for 10-car trains?
As stated in other posts, for an S-Bahn-like operation, locomotive-hauled trains are suboptimal; motor units are to be preferred, because of a better deadweight per passenger ratio.
One thing may actually tip in favor of electrification and EMUs is that the travel time may get short enough so that the same interval can be maintained with one or two trains less. Together with the lower operation and maintenance cost (and the longer lifespan of electric vehicles), the difference between electric operation and diesel operation may point even more towards electrification…
Concerning electric operation, regenerative braking can feed back a considerable amount of energy, which can be used by other consumers. Regenerative braking with diesel operation does not top up the fuel tank :) …
