Two points about power in California:

Solar is a better match to demand here than in some other places because much of the peak demand is for air conditioning, which peaks when the sun is up.

The state recognizes that energy storage will be important in the future and is encouraging (requiring) the utilities to increase power storage, whether pumped hydro, battery, solar thermal or whatever.

The state government has been very sucessful in changing the way power is used here. Over the last twenty years the power use in the US has continued to rise year by year, but in California the power usage has been flat, and that is in spite of a continuing increase in population.
