That's a slightly old story, but it appears that there's still some activity on the line with the
Gisborne City Vintage Railway group. Their site (in their About page) does have the following footnote:
Quote:KiwiRail has made the decision to mothball the Gisborne to Napier Line as of November 2012. As of 2013, the Beach Loop Trip is currently unavailable due to damage at the Beach Loop portion of the line and KiwiRail made the decision in April 2014 to also close the line from Muriwai to Gisborne due to urgent bridge repairs. Geoff Joyce (President) is still negotiating with KiwiRail to see if we can continue to use the line as a private operator between Gisborne and Beach Loop. Costs and logistics of this will need to be explored.
So it's an occasional tourist train, no longer connected to the national railway network.
Still, it's one of the better air/rail attractions around.
