Look, I am generally on the right politically, but it makes me cringe when I hear people like talk show host Michael Medved fulminate against "stupid choo choo trains." In an age of $4 trillion budgets and a $20 trillion national debt, Amtrak's measly $1.5 billion subsidy is a rounding error in the bigger scheme of things, and spending so much time trying to kill it comes off as petty and small minded, not to mention making one's self look innumerate.
No form of public transportation operates without some kind of subsidy from Uncle Sam. The air traffic control system and public airports require many billions of dollars more than Amtrak every year. What do you think an airplane ticket would cost if the private airlines had to pay for their own "disptachers" (air traffic controllers) and "stations" (airports)?
