Well, we CAN have a decent long distance rail system; it's just people like you refuse to pay for it, and the vast majority of Americans have no use for it.
LD ridership in Fiscal Year 2016 was 4.7 million riders. Assuming they all rode a round-trip, that's 2.35 million Americans, or less than 1% of American residents. And we know since there are repeat-riders, foreigners riding the trains, you can see that to over 99% of Americans - Amtrak long distance trains are not on the radar.
So...between the refusal to use it, and the refusal to pay for it...it's pretty clear that we can have it - we DON'T WANT IT.
