A US federal court has approved sale of the assets of bankrupt Pacific Imperial Railroad, Inc. (PIR) to Baja California Railroad, Inc. (BJRR). BJRR is the contract operator for the 40-mile Tijuana-Tecate shortline in the Mexican state of Baja California. The primary PIR asset acquired by BJRR is a lease (until December 20, 2111, from the Metropolitan Transit System) of the 70-mile "Desert Line" from the border crossing near Tecate eastward to a connection with Union Pacific at Plaster City, California, in the Imperial Valley. BJRR says that rehabilitation of the Desert Line will begin next month. This will provide the rail corridor in Baja California with an an eastern outlet, in addition to its currently functional western border connection to the San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad at Tijuana. The Tijuana-Tecate line is completely isolated from the Mexican railways system. Lowell G. McManus
