NWP -- Island Mtn. tunnel signal system
A few months ago, Nudge asked about a signal system at Island Mountain. I just noticed
this photo on Ebay dated 1956. Behold, a signal! It appears to be functioning as a
block signal, displaying "stop".
In an old Trainorders post, Railbaron cites his January 1, 1940 NWP ETT, which says that
it was indeed an automatic block signal:

...under Rule 509 in the ETT it does also talk about Island Mountain:
"Train movements through Tunnel No. 27 (Island Mountain) are protected by signals.
Automatic block signals must not be depended on to protect trains. When necessary,
trains must be protected by flagman."

This next view is interesting too. The year is 1964 -- a year which should definitely
ring a bell! By December this bridge would be swept away. I also see a roll-up door on
the tunnel face, which was not present in the 1956 view. I think I read that the SP
removed this door sometime prior to the big 1978 tunnel fire.

I remember hearing somewhere that at one time, Island Mountain tunnel had a signal system.
Anybody know if that was true? Looked like a new style relay case in one picture but that
could have been for lights or comm wiring.
Anybody?
