I'm not a fan of the LD trains(from the funding side) except, between Spokane & Minneapolis across Montana & North Dakota. Both states have no major airports and it's a long way to get to one. I think there is some room for federal spending there, but other LD routes should not be subsudised.

Maybe the same dollars should go to encourage low cost hopper airlines, or perhaps Amtrak should sell half the train or more to one of the cruise ship companies for domestic trips, then Amtrak would just operate the train and a couple of coach cars w/ a snack bar. While the rear could just be a rolling travel vacation.

I do feel like travel is a little like US Mail, should have some level do access for all where practical.
