As with every Simple Solution™ that would have many side effects. There are synergies with Amtrak running (or at least involved in) everything. Think of the single reservation system, fleet of equipment, maintenance and repair facilities and staff, train crews that know passenger operation and multi-railroad territories. While it's certainly true that most or all of that can be done a different way, you can't just swing an axe and make it happen unless your purpose is to eliminate practically ALL passenger trains. And if that's your purpose, what are doing posting here, where the general idea is that we actually LIKE trains?
