I am going to add to what Nick wrote.
I am not sure on the current operation of the narrow gauge line or the standard gauge line. This winter everyone received a lot of rain damage so I am not sure when trains will be running on either line. Last I heard a few weeks ago the narrow gauge line had a large washout on one of the switchbacks, multiple landslides, trees down and a broken water main.
The standard gauge line I am had a few landslides and trees down.
I am sure a lot of that has been fixed now but not sure if they have got all of it done or not.
To answer CPRR question.
The sand operation ended in the late 80s or early 90s. I am pretty sure I remember seeing the complete history on it on the santacruztrains.com website. That is a very good site that has photos and history added to it often on the Santa Cruz area as things are found. It is worth taking a look at it if you have time. There is tons of great information. There has been a lot of talk about re activating the sand quarry over the last few years but some environmental group claims there is some legless something there that can't be found anywhere else then there that no one has actually seen but their group so it hasn't been reopened.
I am not sure who the current owner is of it. It has been through a lot of mergers and partial partnerships.
