As far as I can tell, the exhaust pipes for the pumps ran along the edge of the running boards next to the boiler and entered the smokebox at a position that looks like it lines up with where the two pipes at the base of the stack were. I seem to recall seeing other locomotives else where with a similar arrangement, I'll have to do some digging. I know I've seen a number of McCloud engines with the two pipes coming out of the smoke box at the base of the stack.
