I'd ignore the writer's comments that appeared in Trains. She has her own agenda. Consider any such comments as entertainment. As for Amtrak, you can move up fast, as someone who took my suggestion to heart has done. From AC to engineer in a couple of years and he loves the job. They're very short of help. As for pay, you'd be working for a company that some rulers in WashDC want to kill and it could go broke anyway. However, there are plenty of other railroads to work for.
