I was going to say that too.
When you had a fireman the head man usually went back to the second stove for a nap. When we were getting close to head in or the conductor wanted to talk to the head man. you would give the bell two short rings, and the brakeman would answer the same. Then he would walk up and take care of business.

I loved it when they put that "Reset" button right along side the bell button. You would get a bell and it wouldn't quit until you went back and took care of the offending unit. This way you could hit the reset and at least it would be quiet until you went back.
